Many have wondered if they should be keeping a polymer clay journal. In my opinion, I think a polymer clay journal is essential for cataloging where you’ve been, where you’re going, and how you might get there. Think of it as a little “glimpse” into your studio over time.
What Kind of Things Might Your Write Down?
- Colors you’ve used
- New color recipes you’ve made
- Ideas for the future
- Sketches of things that pop into your mind
- Notes of what you made that day
- How you made something
- Photos of inspirational things to inspire you
- Cataloging tools that you used in a NEW manner
You Never Know Where You Might End Up
The truth of the matter is that just because you are working on something today, does not mean that you will be in five years. You may not do clay anymore. You may be the next “big name” in polymer clay. In either case, these notes become an essential part of your artistic journey. Never underestimate a thought, idea, or color scheme. There’s a lot going on in our lives and in our world. This means that there’s more than enough to remember. By writing things down in a notebook, you will ensure that you never forget.
The Next Big Step
Journal your polymer clay art and endeavors through photos. I started a Work-in-Progress (WIP) series of posts on my blog. I take hundreds of pictures in my studio every month. These photos enabled me to catalog my work, progress, recipes, trial, & error. It has been an invaluable part of my studio adventures.
Good luck & enjoy the process.
